3 Hopeful Faces Fawzia Afzal-Khan
Dedicated to Andre Vltchek
by Oxman

“Why won’t they talk to you, Papi?” — one of the author’s home schooled teenage charges

Tariq Ali would not speak to me
Email was all he could do… a bit
Documenting us all to death continuing
Debating, entertaining ad infinitum
In lieu of meaningful solidarity anew

Arundhati Roy, it would gladden her heart
Been wanting to get her on board
For her to do her part from a new angle
Help me deal with the apathy, cynicism, resignation
and ignorance and atomization that keeps us all apart

Now here comes Fawzia Afzal-Khan
with three hopeful faces wrought out of my soul.

When I was not yet eight-years-old I met Edna St. Vincent Millay. Fawzia is a poet too, I understand.

Edna recited, among other things:

The world stands out on either side
No wider than the heart is wide;
Above the world is stretched the sky,—
No higher than the soul is high.
The heart can push the sea and land
Farther away on either hand;
The soul can split the sky in two,
And let the face of God shine through

Long after I had left Edna’s beloved Steepletop, I encountered lovely Larkin in overcast Hull. Known for his grey downsides these days, back in the day I was lucky enough to hear the First Sight clenched fist sounds of hope from the 3 o’clock depths of his heart:

Lambs that learn to walk in snow
When their bleating clouds the air
Meet a vast unwelcome, know
Nothing but a sunless glare.
Newly stumbling to and fro
All they find, outside the fold,
Is a wretched width of cold.

As they wait beside the ewe,
Her fleeces wetly caked, there lies
Hidden round them, waiting too,
Earth’s immeasureable surprise.
They could not grasp it if they knew,
What so soon will wake and grow
Utterly unlike the snow
.

So.. what are the three faces I speak of?

That’s for you and me talk about in confidence soon.

For the drone of what’s left of America makes that still possible, necessary.

I cannot end the abominations alone. And megaphones are dead now.
