The Highly Sensitive Person’s Political Party
WHAT’S HERE IS TRULY UNEDITED, A FIRST DRAFT…which I will probably leave as is. WARNING: THIS IS AN ARCHIVED SITE. YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN’T READ ANYTHING THAT WASN’T SPECIFICALLY RECOMMENDED TO YOU. EACH ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN WITH A SPECIFIC AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE IN MIND. Without the proper context, a given piece can easily be quite puzzling or off-putting. This piece was written primarily for Dr. Elaine N. Aron. Readers who are not highly sensitive may very well think I’m crazy here. But the fact is, insensitivity is not only growing in society, it is being glorified. I care about all people including those lacking sensitivity, but I aim to protect and nurture sensitive souls as a first step… looking forward to incorporating the less sensitive at a later date. They will not be needed for the campaign below initially; they can be warmly welcomed into the fold down the road. Ultimately, of course, the two work best in combination for survival of the species. http://oxtogrind.org/archive/628 is highly recommended for anyone who finds this piece interesting; it is an updated delineation of the basic proposal for action.
The Highly Sensitive Person’s Political Party
Dedicated to the 100th birthday of Jacques Cousteau (this June) and Dr. Elaine N. Aron
by Richard Martin Oxman
“Some sensitive children tip toe on eggshells actually believing that a crack will break their mother’s back, a fissure feeling like fission.” — Tennessee Williams to the author, 1966, Longacre Theatre, New York City
“Thou’st made the world too beautiful this year.
My soul is all but out of me,—let fall
No burning leaf; prithee, let no bird call.” — Edna St. Vincent Millay, from God’s World
I work 24×8 on this sort of thing. As I write, I am entering the 25th hour of May 30, 2010.
Sylvie was just hanging the wash and when I told her that I intended to pen this article, she nodded enthusiastically, and reminded me that she’s always said that if people with migraines set policy… there would be none of this. This meaning everything from EMF cell tower emissions at home to our abominations abroad to acidification and and worse in our waters.
An exaggeration, perhaps, but not by much. [Migraine sufferers do not = HSP sufferers, but bear with me for a moment here.]
Just as sensitive souls tend to become interested in social justice issues early on, physically sensitive individuals recoil in horror at the increasing (horribly negative) influence of chemicals, radio frequency bombardment and all of the other painful elements reaching critical mass in our society. If such citizens were in positions of power, it IS most likely that they would not encourage the continuation of our status quo… with regard to current development trends, incursions overseas, domestic violence or toxification of our seas. Things would be different. Radically different in a healthy way.
Career politics does not welcome sensitive souls, to put it mildly. That’s why, perhaps, we’ve never had a politician with head, heart and soul in a healthy (enough) place at the helm on the state or federal level. And that’s why our momentum is slated to guarantee our doom. There’s no one on the horizon who could possibly work the wonders which beg to be embraced, implemented.
Enter the HSP Party, the Highly Sensitive People’s Party (or something of the sort); maybe HSP can stand for the Highly Sensitive Party.
The HSP idea uses the excellent work of Dr. Elaine N. Aron as a point of departure. It blends her concerns and insights vis-a-vis HSP profiles with the larger societal issues addressed by TOSCA. The bottom line pov being that just like one cannot deal with cancer epidemics by focusing exclusively (or primarily) on genetics, one cannot help HSP souls on the personal plane well without addressing macroscopic environmental and societal influences. [A better intro to TOSCA than the link given directly above is provided in the very first link of this article, at the top. The interview link directly above is mainly useful for those interested in environmental concerns, but is far from ideal on that count.]
It is estimated that 15-20% of the general population can be categorized as HSP. Broken down as per the active electorate in California, that’s more than enough to secure the Sacred Seat in Sacramento. And the state’s gubernatorial office holds enough power — under utilized to date — to unilaterally transform life for one and all, not only statewide but nationwide. [That point demands elaboration, of course, which I will be glad to provide upon request.] The HSP pov would be that to maximize the potential for affecting change, one would be wise to not invest much on the federal level, and concentrate on creating unprecedented changes in a highly influential state.
I sent the missive below to the Events Coordinator at Kepler’s Bookstore in Menlo Park, California. I also sent a copy of it to the Haven in British Columbia, where Dr. Aron is scheduled to appear on June 11th. I’m holding my breath, hoping that the message will get to her right away, and that the thrust of the whole shebang will resonate with her.
Dearest Pam:
Your colleague Nancy suggested I contact you about reaching Dr. Elaine N. Aron through Kepler’s Books. Since she is scheduled to appear at your store on June 3rd, I thought you might be able to let her know that there is an organization interested in backing her to run as our working figurehead candidate for Governor of California. We’re shooting to have twelve unaffiliated, non-politician citizens serving as Governor of California in lieu of having a single careerist at the helm once again. Dr. Aron would also be very welcome to simply be one of our dozen gubernatorial coalition members on a basis that suits her interests.
Dr. Wallace J. Nichols http://www.depauw.edu/news/index.asp?id=25398 is one of our dozen gubernatorial coalition members, and — because he is involved in addressing some of the same issues as your June 1st guest, David Helvarg, — we’d like you to feel free to pass this missive on to the founder and president of the Blue Frontier Campaign.

Note: Members of the gubernatorial coalition will NOT have to campaign, not have to give speeches or travel for the TOSCA-like effort. Definitely no fund raising will be involved. Our coalition will have plenty of “experts” to draw upon in various fields, citizens available to tend to the various tasks, responsibilities associated with the gubernatorial office. We submit that a single gubernatorial face is not necessary for the public, that healthy results and a sense of citizen participation in decision-making is what’s needed.
