Stephen King and Haiti and Edna’s Words
by The Ox

“The world stands out on either side
No wider than the heart is wide;
Above the world is stretched the sky,—
No higher than the soul is high.
The heart can push the sea and land
Farther away on either hand;
The soul can split the sky in two,
And let the face of God shine through.”
— from Edna St. Vincent Millay’s Renascence

At http://talkstephenking.blogspot.com/2010/01/haiti-not-under-dome.html, I just posted the entry below:

During the last 24 hours, I have been trying to reach Tabitha King regarding issues which are important to her in Maine. I would like Stephen to know that with respect to Haiti, I have a proposal for action which follows a new paradigm… which I would like to share with him; it is a proposal which has the imprimatur of the late Howard Zinn and other high profile figures worldwide. It needs to be tweaked for the present moment, but it is designed to provide more than band aids. It is all about dealing with the source of the bleeding in that country whilst we do the necessary work to address immediate concerns. Fact is, I really could make a grand contribution to what is dear to Stephen’s heart, ameliorating the ongoing plight of the people in Haiti.

[Pause.]

I joyously jump around from here to there, trying to connect with this or that person on various matters. But as I move from one issue to another, I never forget the organic interplay between ALL major societal challenges. And I acknowledge that to get started in a meaningful way soon enough… I’m going to have to bond with someone or some group quickly. For, as I repeat daily, we do have ultra-serious deadlines on several fronts. Also daily, I go through more rejections than Stephen was hit with — totally — prior to submitting Carrie. [Well... at least it feels that way.] That’s partly a function of people not really feeling our horrid momentum, not seeing the role played by resignation, cynicism, apathy, ignorance and atomization. [Pause.] Regardless, moving in solidarity –urgently– is important.

Whoever reads this: Thanks for your kind consideration.

Respectfully,

Richard Martin Oxman, who was born on the same day as Stephen King… five years earlier. Contact the author at 831-688-8038 at any hour, or email him (that’s me!) at tosca.2010@yahoo.com.
